Werner Otto always considered his entrepreneurial room for action and his manifold creative freedom as social commitment and socio-political task. Put simply: he wanted to share his large success – also the financial one – with other and return something to society.
“Werner Otto is an entrepreneur who was – and also remained in times of large success – aware of his social and political responsibility,” wrote the former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt about his long-standing friend.
Werner Otto acted thereby very purposefully. True to his often quoted phrase “People first”, he spend his money for those who are time and again considered to be the weakest members in our society: the children.
In order to be able to provide effective help and to remedy human distress, he founded the Werner Otto Foundation in 1969. This medical foundation steps in in those cases in which the state usually doesn’t provide money for financial reasons or not quick enough. In particular the ability to make quick decisions and to act within a short time is one of the strengths of the private research promotion saving the one or other important program from its discontinuation.
Another project of the Werner Otto foundation is the scientific treatment center for children with cancer at the university children’s hospital in Hamburg-Eppendorf that saved the live of numerous children with leukemia.
Inspired by a report by the family’s pediatrician about excellent treatment results for children in the USA, Werner Otto founded the Werner Otto Institute on the premises of the Alsterdorf foundation, Hamburg, in 1974. It is the first and up to now the only special institute in northern Germany exclusively dedicated to the early detection and treatment of developmentally challenged or handicapped children and adolescents.
Every two years, the Werner Otto foundation awards a prize for excellent scientific work to researchers and physicians active in Hamburg for promoting medical research. Since 1996 exists the “Werner Otto scholarship for the promotion of medical junior scientists at the University of Hamburg”. Formerly hearing-impaired children and adolescents are learning to hear again after a cochlear implant operation in the Werner Otto house in Berlin.
Moreover, his foundation supports every year numerous measures for the promotion of medical research in Hamburg.
Werner Otto lived up to his principle of lived social responsibility in other areas. Already at a very early point in time he supported a responsible treatment of nature and environmental protection. Otto donated to the American Harvard University a new museum for the housing of the art of German-speaking expressionists: the Werner Otto Hall.
In Seelow, his place of birth, where the last serious battles took place at the end of World War II with 50,000 dead people, Werner Otto had the church tower reconstructed and the church nave renewed. In Potsdam, the Belvedere palace was refurbished thanks to Otto’s support. In 2003, Werner Otto donated 4.5 million euros to the concert house at Berlin’s Gendarmenmarkt square. A large, hardly used room was redesigned with this money: the Werner Otto hall is today used for chamber concerts, banquettes or rehearsals.
In Hamburg, Otto supported the redesign of the Jungfernstieg promenade. Today, the old boulevard lights up in new shine.
Werner Otto has been awarded numerous distinctions and medals for is entrepreneurial and social commitment, among others the Grand Cross 1st class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Ehrendenkmünze [honorary commemorative medal] in Gold and the Bürgermeister-Stolten-Medaille of the Hamburg Senate, the honorary title "Professor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg", the Ernst-Reuter-Medal of the Berlin Senate as well as the Konrad Adenauer Foundation's "Social Market Economy Prize" for his entrepreneurship. He is an honorary doctor and honorary senator of the University of Hamburg as well as Laureate of the Hall of Fame in the German House of History in Bonn. In 2009, Otto received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” of the “CEE Real Estate Award” for his significant contribution to the real estate market in Central and Eastern Europe.
On August 11, 2009, he was made Honorary Citizen of Berlin.

Die Werner Otto Stiftung
Die Werner Otto Stiftung, gegründet 1969 fördert die medizinische Forschung an Hamburger Krankenhäusern. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt dabei im Engagement für kranke oder behinderte Kinder. Obwohl gerade diese Kinder und ihre Familien vom Schicksal oft hart betroffen sind, stehen sie als Minderheit meist nicht im Vordergrund des öffentlichen Interesses. Daher ist für Sie private Hilfsbereitschaft besonders wichtig.

Das Werner Otto Institut
1974 wurde im Auftrag von Werner Otto auf dem Gelände der Evangelischen Stiftung Alsterdorf (damals noch Alsterdorfer Anstalten) die erste Spezialeinrichtung Norddeutschlands eröffnet, die sich ausschließlich der Früherkennung und Behandlung entwicklungsgestörter oder behinderter Kinder und Jugendlicher widmet.

Das Werner Otto Haus
Mit einem fröhlichen Fest wurde im Sommer 2000 in Berlin-Neukölln das „Werner Otto Haus“ eröffnet. Die renommierte „Beratungsstelle für Hörbehinderte“ hatte damit einen dringend benötigten, hochmodernen Erweiterungsbau erhalten.

Ein Stück Kindheit wird gerettet: die Kirche von Seelow
Die Restaurierung der Seelower Kirche, seiner Taufkirche, ist ein besonders eindrucksvolles Beispiel für Werner Ottos Art, anderen zu helfen – mit dem Wiederaufbau wurde versucht, eine schreckliche Wunde aus den letzten Tagen des Zweiten Weltkrieges symbolisch zu heilen. Nach 53 Jahren gab es in Seelow wieder ein Glockengeläut.

Der Werner-Otto-Saal im Berliner Konzerthaus
2003 wird der Werner-Otto-Saal im Berliner Konzerthaus eröffnet, für dessen Ausgestaltung Werner Otto 4,5 Millionen Euro gestiftet hatte. Der Saal, der seit der achtmonatigen Umgestaltung Platz für 280 Besucher bietet, kann heute als Probenraum, für Bankette, Theater und Kammermusik gentuzt werden.
Die Stadt Berlin ehrt ihn mit der Ernst-Reuter-Plakette.

Schön wie einst: das Belvedere
Das frisch renovierte Anwesen wurde im Juni 2003 vom damaligen Bundespräsidenten Johannes Rau eröffnet. Werner Otto hatte nicht nur diese Kosten übernommen. Die Einweihung wurde mit einem rauschenden Fest gefeiert, an dem auch Bauarbeiter, Anwohner und sonstige gute Geister teilnahmen. Der Mäzen selbst und seine Frau Maren setzten sich damals mitten unter die Gäste an einen der langen Tische. Bei einem frisch gezapften Bier ließ sich Werner Otto noch einmal ausführlich über die zurückliegenden Arbeiten informieren.

Der Hamburger Jungfernstieg im neuem Glanz
Im Jahr 2002 stiftete Werner Otto vier Millionen Euro für den Verein "Lebendige Jungfernstieg", der es sich zum Ziel gemacht hat, den gleichnamigen Boulevard an der Hamburger Binnenalster wieder in altem Glanz erstrahlen zu lassen.

Werner und Maren Otto Stiftung
Gegründet im September 2009 ist der Zweck der Stiftung die Förderung der Altenhilfe, insbesondere in Berlin und Brandenburg. Schwerpunkt sollen Einrichtungen der Altenhilfe einschließlich der Verbesserung der Ausbildung von Pflegepersonal sein.
